This is the film that started the Fast and Furious legacy. It's an adrenaline-filled ride where street-racing becomes a way of life. The most famous drivers in the world are drawn to Tokyo, drawn by a new style of street racing never before seen - drifting. Among them are Sean Boswell, an American boy living in Tokyo with his racing enthusiast father, and Takashi, a young man with an attitude problem who thinks he's God's gift to women. Takashi signs up for an illegal night race to impress some girls but doesn't show up on time so Sean takes his place to keep him out of trouble. During a faceoff with a rival driver, the police arrive and both drivers take off with Sean in pursuit. Sean is arrested and faces jail time, but through his father's connections he's released on condition that he spend the rest of the summer with him in Tokyo. Sean has to do community service at a local driver's school owned by Takashi's dad, where students learn how to control their souped up cars through an intense course. At first it seems like it will be just another summer doing chores for his dad, but when Takashi is murdered after being involved in another illegal race, Sean discovers there may be more to this school than meets the eye. When he discovers that Takashi was killed while trying to help a friend, Sean vows to find out who is behind the wheel of the souped up cars that have caused so much trouble. The rest of the film is about how Sean goes undercover at his school to get evidence against his classmate Kazuki Oyama, who was given credit for having engineered Takashi's death. After an emotional confrontation with Kazuki, Sean confronts him in a fight which ends up with Kazuki being arrested for breaking racing laws. At his trial, he is found guilty and sentenced to spend 30 days in jail. Sean and his friends go to visit him and Kazuki tells them to pass the word around about the NOS, a motor oil that can give you incredible speed and power. He then gives Sean a bag containing money and says that he'll see Sean in LA.
